What questions the metric helps to answer
The formula is: total training hours/full-time employees. “Full-time employee” may be HR jargon, however, you will probably want to exclude part-time employees and focus on training volume for employees with full-time status. This metric is most often used for formal training only, which is more costly in terms of money but not in terms of time. The 70–20–10 training model commonly in use suggests that effective learning comprises of 70% on the job, 20% from managers and peers, and 10% from formal training like courses and reading.7 It is worth noting that 21st century employees do not physically need (or want) to leave their working environment to carry out formal training.
Questions this metric helps to answer include:
How do I as a manager get the most out of the formal training for my employees? How do I best leverage that investment for the company and for the individual?
How do the formal training days complement on-the-job learning and feedback from managers, peers, and customers?
How do I utilize the 70–20–10 training model?
How do I keep my training budget in turbulent times?
